Tidy Kitchen, Tidy Mind

When you get a new kitchen it’s all shiny and clean, beautiful and simple. We all want to keep our families happy and healthy, and that starts with providing good food, made with care. Having a nice kitchen is one of life’s little pleasures, and we want you to keep it that way. As you’re choosing your dream kitchen, we want to help you consider practical ways going forward, to keep your kitchen in a lovely, relaxing, tidy condition.

This process can start now, before you install your new, dream kitchen. Don’t take it all with you – declutter and plan out ways of clever storage, considering what you actually need. When you declutter you spend less time cleaning and searching for things. You’ll also save money, by not accidentally buying duplicates of items you had in the back of the cupboard already.

We all love a kitchen gadget, but with each item comes the question of where to store it. If you’re like 99% of the nation, the answer will probably be the same. Keep it on the counter, between the toaster and the kettle, next to the bread maker, the airfryer, the espresso machine, the grill, the popcorn maker, did we forget anything?

Oh yes, the water filter, the waffle machine, the microwave, the pasta machine, the blender, mixer, smoothie maker…

The problem here is not the gadgets themselves, they’re great. The problem is that it makes cleaning a lot more complicated. So if you want your kitchen to be spotlessly clean, you should keep things out of the way where they won’t get dusty and they won’t get in the way of your cleaning. We can recommend a larder cupboard, to keep them stored away, but still easy to access whenever you need them.

The key here is to prioritize. Work out which items you use every day, and those are the ones you keep on the counter. The less you use an item, the further back it goes in the cupboard.

Letting things build up means you’ll just be making the job more difficult and time consuming in the end. Be organised, be prepared, and clean as you go.

One of the main skills of a professional chef is the ability to keep a workstation clean and organised with everything prepared to make a dish. The French call it “mise en place” which means something like “getting things in place”. It makes great sense because it cuts out the stress. You’ll enjoy cooking more. You’ll take less time to achieve a better result, and your kitchen will be cleaner.

For instance, when you come to prepare vegetables have a bowl for peelings and off-cuts. Be prepared, keep all the mess in the same place, and above all clean as you go. If you’ve got a few spare minutes while something is cooking, you could make the most of that time by getting on with the washing up.

We all know we’re meant to let things like meat rest for a few minutes before serving. That’s the perfect time to get on with a little half time cleaning. Wipe down the surfaces, get the pots and pans soaking for a minute or two, load the dishwasher. There’s always something you can do to save time later. The point is to use your time wisely. You’ll be making life a lot easier in the long run.

Tidy anything that you don’t use regularly away, and consider rearranging your kitchen around your most frequent activities. For example, you can create a tea station, where mugs, tea bags, kettle and teaspoons are all in one place. A clean kitchen is a happy kitchen. Preparing food in an organised, tidy, and hygienic kitchen is enjoyable.

If you’re looking for a new kitchen, choose one that can make your life easier. Our kitchens are all designed to be practical and simple to maintain and keep clean. We have so many storage solutions to maximise your space, ranging from full larder cupboards to cleverly designed drawers.

Imagine having a coffee at your breakfast bar, with your sparkling clean kitchen around you, relaxed in the knowledge that it will take minutes to clean behind you and you can walk in any time and be happy. A tidy kitchen means a tidy mind!
