Get your kitchen Christmas ready

It’s getting colder outside; the evenings are longer and the shops are filled with delicious food and festive decorations which can only mean one thing… Christmas is just around the corner!

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the festive period. There is usually a constant flow of traffic running through the house, whether that be the adults running around like headless chickens trying to organise Christmas dinner, the little ones trying to find the secret stash of chocolates or the drunken uncle who has fallen asleep at the dining table after one too many. Either way, there are always memories to be made during the Christmas period and we don’t want any of them to involve a kitchen nightmare.

The first step to getting your kitchen ready for the festivities is by adding your favourite Christmas decorations!

Top Tip: Adding a Christmas scented candle is the perfect way to create a cosy atmosphere whilst also making your whole home smell beautiful. Plus, it’ll help combat the usual cooking smells… even the Brussel Sprouts.

Although it is tempting, try to restrain from adding too many decorations to your worktop, it’s important to try and keep these areas clear so it leaves more room to bake yummy gingerbread men and prepare Christmas dinner. Instead, think about utilising windowsills and shelves.

If you are hosting a party or dinner this year, this is a great opportunity to make your dining table the festive focal point. Try sticking to a maximum of 4 different colours to play around with, this helps create a cohesive look that will be sure to impress your guests! Adding textures to your dining table is a great way of creating that stylish magazine look that we all know and love. Think about natural elements such as flowers and plants, different fabrics, layered plates and make sure to add a mixture of matt, gloss and metallic items and decorations.

Why not add a festive tablecloth or runner? This not only gives the illusion of a whole new dining table but it can also act as protection in case of any spills.

If you want to add some extra detail you can even add extra accessories to your chairs like our lovely customer Laura (Instagram: @livingwith_laura_j) who added beautiful miniature wreathes to the back of her bar stools for that added touch of festive magic. Laura shares lots of helpful tips for decorating your kitchen, table and house so be sure to pay her a visit!

It’s no secret that Christmas can get pretty messy, pretty quick. A few weeks beforehand, try and dedicate some time to go through all your kitchen cupboards and have a really good declutter. (Yep…even the junk draw that we are all guilty of having!)

Try to focus on the things that you can’t live without and separate them from the items that you haven’t reached for in a while to free up some extra cupboard space. If you have any preserved or long-life foods such as rice, pasta, soups etc you can donate them to a local food bank in your area.

If you are hosting your own Christmas dinner, it may be worth investing in some new cooking appliances to make your life just that little bit easier! Our partners offer a huge variety of options to cater for every budget and every cooking need, whether it is a whole new oven or the latest cooking gadget.

Top Tip: Don’t forget you get 10% off on any appliances from when you buy a Smile Kitchen!
